Saudi Arabia Severed diplomatic ties with Iran

Saudi Arabia severed diplomatic ties with Iran on Sunday after angry protesters ransacked and set fire to the Saudi embassy in Tehran over the killing of a Shiite Muslim cleric Nimr Al-Nimr. Ban's spokesman Stephane Dujarrie said United Nations secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke by phone with Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers to urge the them to avoid and measures that could aggravate the situation between the two countries and in the region as a whole. 

 

Dujarric said the breakdown of relations between Riyadh and Teheran could have more serious consequences for the region. Iran and Saudi Arabia play a crucial role in a diplomatic push to end nearly five years of war in Syria and bring about a political settlement for Yemen.
